Description
The Consolidated PBY Catalina is a flying boat and amphibious aircraft that was produced in the 1930's and 1940's. In service with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and British Royal Air Force (RAF), it was known as the Canso. It was one of the most widely used seaplanes of World War 2. The first flight was on March 28, 1935. It was first introduced to the United States Navy (USN) in October of 1936.This aircraft with serial number WQ-M (VA703), was one of a batch of 36 GR.lla's produced by Canadian Vickers, and the only one of this variant that was fitted with ASV.ll radar. It was flown by the Royal Air Force 209 Squadron. The 209th was a flying boat squadron that flew maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine patrols from British bases from 1939 to 1942. In May of 1941, this squadron played a major role in the hunt for the German battleship "Bismarck", helping to relocate the German battleship on 26 May, after she had slipped away from the British fleet. In 1941, the 209 Squadron was based at Pembroke Dock, South Wales, United Kingdom.
This aircraft is a beautiful reproduction of one of the famous Catalina's of the 209th Squadron. It is a hefty (the model itself weighs 2 pounds) 1:72 scale, die cast, very highly detailed Royal Air Force model. It comes with five visible crewmen, a movable front gun turret, retractable wingtip floats, rotating propellers, multiple fuselage and wing mounted radar antennas, and can be displayed in the water landing or land configuration with the supplied landing gear. It comes with a display stand. The
approximate dimensions are 10.75" fuselage length with a 17.25" wingspan.
The box has minor shelf wear. All sales are final. Shipping to the USA only.
PLEASE NOTE:
This is a very difficult model to find at this price. Although the aircraft is new, one of the four wing struts is missing (see photograph). I am not sure what happened to it. It is possible to get the part from Corgi, but I have not had the time to do so. Also, a few of the small white radar antennas on the wing and fuselage came loose during the original shipment. I have not attempted to re-attach them as they might come loose again during any future shipment. I will leave it to the purchaser to attach them if this will be used as a display model. This model has sat on the shelf for some time, but was never taken out of the box to display. As such, even though the model is new, I am listing it as used.
