Offered is a very rare Arapaho hair ornament in the effigy of a Thunderbird, ca. 1880. It measures 6.5" long x 5.75" wide and is made from rawhide. The head, wings and perimeter are accented with blue glass beads sewn with sinew. The front depicts designs of a heart, lightning bolts and dots of red pigment. A hide thong with brass beads was used to tie this to the warrior's hair. In Alfred Kroeber's report on the Arapaho, he draws a virtually identical example (see picture) to the piece I am offering at auction. This is a very rare piece, hence the starting amount.
